References

There are a few very good references we recommend to visitors.  The most exhaustive and authoritative book is

Clarke, Antigone, and Joseph O'Kelly. Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies & Society: 1700-1880. Schiffer Publishing, Limited, 2018.

An excellent new book was published this summer:  Stevens, Anne et al.  The Story of British Tea Chests and Caddies: Social History and Decorative Techniques.  ACC Art Books: Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, 2022.

Also see: Harris, David. Portable Writing Desks,  Shire, 2001.

Another engaging book about writing instruments is:  George Mell, Writing Instruments, Shire Publications, 1980.

An especially engaging and eminently readable book on the social, political, and economic role of tea in England is: Markman Ellis, Richard Coulton, & Matthew Mauger. The Empire of Tea:  The Asian Leaf that Conquered the World.  Speaking Tiger. 2015.
